The name means "The Blue Pearl" in Italian.
The leather it makes lives up to it.
Here is the story behind La Perla Azzurra — an iconic Tuscan tannery in Santa Croce sull'Arno, and the craftsmen behind our Missouri leather watch straps.
1. A Family Business Since 1967
Founded in 1967 in Santa Croce sull'Arno by Franco Boldrini, La Perla Azzurra has built a decades-long legacy of authentic vegetable tanning.
When Tuscan tanneries came together to establish the Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale (Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium) to protect their traditional craftsmanship, La Perla Azzurra was right there as a founding member.
Today, the tannery is led by Franco's son, Massimo Boldrini, continuing the family's dedication to slow, artisan leather making.
2. French Hides, Argentine Tannins
Great leather starts with exceptional raw materials and natural ingredients.
- The Hides: Like many elite Tuscan tanneries, La Perla Azzurra sources its heavy raw hides primarily from France, selected for their uniform density, strength, and clean grain.
- The Tannins: The tanning process relies heavily on natural quebracho extract imported from Argentina — a natural plant tannin renowned for giving leather durability, rich warm tones, and structural firmness.
3. Missouri: Their Signature Leather
La Perla Azzurra produces several celebrated leather articles, but Missouri is undoubtedly their crowning achievement.
Missouri is a premium full-grain vachetta leather. During finishing, the hide is hot-stuffed with a proprietary blend of natural oils and waxes.
This process results in a smooth, slightly waxy surface texture with rich aniline color depth. As you wear it, the surface warms, absorbs daily oils, and deepens into a rich, personal patina.
4. Checked, Not Just Claimed
True quality and sustainability are verified by standards, not marketing claims.
La Perla Azzurra has held a Silver Rating from the Leather Working Group (LWG) since 2020, along with environmental sustainability certification from ICEC.
Both certifications are awarded through rigorous, independent third-party audits evaluating water treatment, energy consumption, and raw material traceability.
