1. Two Tanning Methods, One Unique Leather

Most leathers are tanned using a single primary method.

Chromexcel is unique because it undergoes a combination-tanning process.

First, it goes through chrome tanning, which imparts strength, flexibility, and a soft hand-feel.

Then, it undergoes a second round of vegetable tanning using natural tree barks, the traditional, slow way.

This hybrid process gives Chromexcel the ultimate balance: the resilience and suppleness of chrome tanning, combined with the rich depth, structure, and patina potential of vegetable tanning.

2. The "Hot Stuffing" Secret

This crucial step is what gives Chromexcel its world-famous feel and character.

While the leather is warm, it is heavily nourished and packed with a proprietary blend of natural oils, waxes, and greases — including food-grade tallow and natural beeswax.

This process, known in the trade as "hot stuffing," impregnates the deep fibres of the hide.

The result is a leather that is exceptionally soft, durable, resilient, and naturally water-resistant.

3. Why It Changes Color When Bent

Because the leather is saturated with oils and waxes, those compounds sit directly beneath the surface fibres.

When you bend, pull, or pressure the leather, the oils shift away from the stress point, causing the surface to temporarily lighten.

This phenomenon is called the "pull-up" effect.

It is Chromexcel's signature characteristic and the easiest way to identify genuine combination-tanned pull-up leather.

As the leather relaxes or is rubbed with a warm thumb, the oils migrate back, deepening the color once more.

4. A Century-Old Recipe Made Slowly

Chromexcel isn't a modern synthetic creation.

The core formula and process have remained virtually unchanged for nearly a century at Horween's Chicago tannery.

Producing a single batch of Chromexcel takes nearly a month and involves dozens of separate, highly skilled steps — from retanning to hand-rubbing finishes.
